General
I am currently finalizing the design of the three main characters and the basic animations.
In the screenshot above, you can also see a test of the Dutch translation. The game will support multiple languages.
The main characters are Martin, Diana, and Nikki, each with their own unique traits. This family will experience the adventures together. Players can continuously switch between characters. Naturally, some puzzles can be solved by one character while another may not be able to. Diana, for example, is fearless, whereas Martin has a fear of heights and won’t climb everywhere.
Design
While designing, I discovered that a character had to be created using a minimal number of pixels. It needed to look natural and believable without unnecessary details. After some experimentation, I found that the game Thimbleweed Park
had achieved this remarkably well. Additionally, the game had made its spritesheets publicly available for research.
By studying the spritesheets of Thimbleweed Park
https://github.com/grumpygamer/DeloresDev/tree/master/SpriteSheets), I was able to minimize the number of required pixels. Next, it was crucial to create unique characters that had not been used or designed before. I believe I have succeeded in this.
Since I couldn’t fully handle the artwork alone, I enlisted a designer to develop the characters in Aseprite. Later, I will write an interview article about this process.
Animation
Walking and standing still work well in the game, but I am still fine-tuning the movement to make it look more natural.
